DWTN UK

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers.
A better starting point.

The practical questions teams ask about digital waste paperwork.

Does DWTN UK manage waste transfer note season tickets?

Yes. Team, Business and Enterprise include Season Ticket Management. Link a ticket to a customer and collection sites, record qualifying collections individually, gather electronic acceptance, and retrieve the ticket and schedule from the customer record or Season Tickets area.

Season tickets apply to qualifying repeated transfers; they do not replace any separate movement records or applicable reporting obligations. Read about season tickets.

Can I use electronic waste transfer notes?

Yes. England and Wales allow electronic notes and signatures. Required information and record access still matter. Read the record requirements.

Does a WTN automatically report to DEFRA?

No. A waste transfer note and a DEFRA receipt report are separate records. DWTN UK supports integration with DEFRA’s Digital Waste Tracking service for applicable waste receipt reporting, subject to the relevant regulatory requirements and eligibility criteria. For an eligible organisation, an administrator adds its DEFRA API code and enables the connection. Whether a report is required depends on the movement, role, nation and rollout phase; check the submission status and returned government reference to confirm acceptance.

Who is DWTN UK for?

DWTN UK serves waste producers, carriers, brokers, dealers and receivers, helping teams manage digital records across the waste-transfer chain.

When is Digital Waste Tracking mandatory?

Receiving-site reporting started in England and Wales on 1 October 2026. In-scope sites in Scotland and Northern Ireland follow on 1 January 2027. See the dates and official guidance.

How long should I keep a WTN?

Non-hazardous transfer notes in England and Wales must be kept for at least two years. Other records and jurisdictions can require longer. Check the retention overview.

Can drivers use a phone and work without signal?

Yes. DWTN works in a browser on phone, tablet and desktop. Sign in and open the WTN form while connected on the device first. Then create and complete WTNs without mobile reception or Wi-Fi. Drafts and signatures stay in that browser on that device until synchronisation. When connectivity returns while DWTN is open, queued WTNs start syncing automatically; you can also choose Sync now. Check the status to confirm server acceptance. For security, reconnect at least every 12 hours to refresh offline access.
